When a user double-clicks on a drive letter, user gets a program list screen, asking which program to open the drive with or receives the following: Windows cannot find 'AcaRmoNa.ExE'

Open My Computer.
Click on Tools>Folder Options.
Check 'Show Hidden Files & Folders' and uncheck 'Hide protected operating system files'.
Go to the root of the drive (example, C:\ ) in Explorer and delete the file autorun.inf if it exists.
Do the same with all the drives exhibiting the same problem and reboot.

If this doesn't fix it, or if you didn't find any autorun.inf file:
Select Start>Run.
Type regedit and hit enter.
Navigate to the following key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\MountPoints2
Expand the key. You should see various folders/keys with the drive names (C,D,E,F etc.)
Make sure that the folders corresponding with the drive names do not have any sub-folders (visible when you click on the '+' sign next to the folder in the left pane) named '_Autoplay' and 'Shell'.
If you see them, highlight them with a single-click and hit delete.
Reboot.

How to Perform a Windows repair on a Windows XP virtual machine in Fusion 3.x

To repair Windows, you must download a drivers file, mountthe drivers, and then repair Windows:

1. Downloadthe SCSI driver floppy image from http://download3.vmware.com/software/vmscsi-1.2.0.4.flp.(Do not try to open that link; instead, ctrl+click the link, and choose SaveLink As... or Download Linked File As....).

Note: When downloading in Google Chrome, the final extension may bedoubled. Ensure that this file is saved asvmscsi-1.2.0.4.flp andnot vmscsi-1.2.0.4.flp.flp.

2. Add afloppy drive to the virtual machine and mount the floppy image:

a. Shutdown the virtual machine.

b. Goto Virtual Machine > Settings > Other Device.

c. Click +and choose Add Floppy.

A dialog appears asking you to choose a floppy image file.

d. Browseto the location of the .flp file that you downloaded and select the file.

e. Select Connected.

3. Mount your Windows ISO (or put the Windows diskin the drive) and make sure the CD drive is connected by going to VirtualMachine > Settings > CDs & DVDs and selecting Connected.

4. After thedrivers have finished loading, when Windows prompts you, press S tospecify additional devices.

5. Choose VMwareSCSI Controller and press Enter.

6. Press Enter againto continue past the Specify additional devices screen.

7.Press Enter on the Welcome to Setup screen,to indicate you want to set up Windows. This will guide you to the automatedrepair, rather than the manual repair option through the Recover Console.

8.Press F8 toagree to the End User Agreement.

You see a screen that says:

If one of the following Windows XP installations is damaged,Setup can try to repair it.

9. Selectthe Windows install that you want to repair, if there is more than one.

10. Press R tostart the repair.

11. Continuewith the Windows install wizard to repair Windows, until it completes.

Note for Windows XP 32-bit:

After the repair finishes, disconnect the floppy drive sothat Windows does not try to boot from the disk. To do so:

1. Whenthe Setup is restarting screen appears, press Control+ Command to release the mouse.

2. Clickthe picture of the disk image in the Fusion icon tray and select DisconnectFloppy.

Warning: If you do not do this before rebooting, you may receive anerror: NTLDR is missing.

How do you repair Active Desktop in Windows XP

Option #1

1. Open the Control Panel

2. Open Display Properties

3. Click the Desktop tab

4. Click the Customize Desktop button

5. Click the Web tab in the Desktop Items window

If you wish to disable Active Desktop, make sure all checkboxes in this windoware un-checked.

Option #2

1. Rightclick on desktop

2. Selectproperties

3. Themes

4. Changeyour current theme

Once you have done this, you should be able to go back toyour original theme without the problem appearing.

Option#3

If that doesn't work,try searching for a file called desktop.htt and deleting it (it is a hiddenfile so go to "advanced search" and make sure to check the box tosearch for hidden files). You can also try manually deleting this file, it shouldbe located in your "Document and Settings" under your username

In the left pane of Microsoft Management Console, click Local Users and Groups.
If you don't see Local Users and Groups
If you don't see Local Users and Groups, it's probably because that snap-in has not been added to Microsoft Management Console. Follow these steps to install it:
1. In Microsoft Management Console, click the File menu, and then click Add/Remove Snap-in.
2. Click Local Users and Groups, and then click Add.
3. Click Local computer, and then click Finish.
4. Click OK.
Click the Users folder.
Click Action, and then click New User.
Type the appropriate information in the dialog box, and then clickCreate.
When you are finished creating user accounts, click Close.

If my computer is on a workgroup

Open User Accounts by clicking the Start button , clicking Control Panel, clicking User Accounts and Family Safety, and then clickingUser Accounts.

How to Recover a Lost Windows XP Profile

Symptom:

Logged into windows and a basic desktop appears. My icons and data files are missing.

Solution:

Log off and log on as Administrator

Note: The Registry is one of the most crucial components of Windows operating systems, therefore it is important to backup the current Registry prior to making any changes to it. To create a backup, follow these simple steps:

a. Go to RUN and type “regedit”, hit Enter.

b. Open the File menu and click on Export, a new screen will open.

c. In the bottom of the screen, select All under Export range (it is a good idea to backup everything in the registry in case a registry entry accidentally gets changed)

d. Give a name to your Registry backup file and then press the Save button.

Note: To restore the registry, open File menu in the Registry editor and select Import. Browse and select the backup file you created and then press Open. Your Registry will be restored.

Now when you've successfully created a backup of Windows registry, follow these steps to recover the lost user profile:

a. Go to RUN and type in ‘Regedit’ then press OK.

b. This will open the Registry Editor - A Windows tool that stores important operating system and users’ information.

c. On the left side, go to the following key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList

d. Now rename the new profile that the system created by adding .TMP at the end.

e. Now rename the previous profile, removing the .BAK and restart.

After Logging into Windows, you should now have your old profile.

Next Download and Run the following patch. This will prevent your profile from getting corrupted again.

How to Burn Your Own OS X Lion Install DVD

Note that the Lion installer deletes itself if you upgrade, so if you want to do this, you have to do it before you update your computer to Lion. You can always re-download Lion after the fact, but geez, who wants to do that? Once you've got it on your system, here's what you do:

1. Download Lion from the Mac App Store. The installer should show up in your Applications folder.

2. Right-click on the installer and hit "Show Package Contents". Navigate to Contents > SharedSupport and look for a file called "InstallESD.dmg".

3. Open up Disk Utility and drag the DMG file into the left-hand sidebar. If you're burning it to a DVD, insert your DVD, select the disk image in the sidebar, and hit the "Burn" button.

Reboot into OS X and hold the option key when you hear the startup chime. You can boot into your DVD drive from there.

You'll not only be able to install Lion from this drive, but you'll also be able to use Disk Utility, recover from a Time Machine backup, and do everything else you could do with the old installation DVDs. Note that when you install Lion, it'll create a recovery partition with all these features anyway, so you don't need the DVD unless you're doing a clean install.

How to Remove IE 9 from Windows 7
